Born in Duluth, Minnesota on October 16. Attended Superior Teacher's College, Superior, Wisconsin. Began military career as an enlisted man, and served on the Mexican border in 1916. Attended officer's training in 1917 and received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 37th Infantry. Resigned his commission in 1919 to work as a journalist.
